TRAVELLING BY AIR
There are 2 airports that serve for the capital of Ukraine: BORYSPOL and KYIV ( ZHULIANY ).
BORYSPOL international airport is situated 40 km away from downtown. It receives flights from throughout the world. Here work representative offices of a multitude of airlines. Among the leading Ukrainian companies one can name UKRAINIAN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES which provides air communication with Western Europe, and AEROSWEET which specializes in flights in Europe and CIS. In the leave season and on big holidays, Christmas, for example, the airport may be overloaded, so we advice you to book tickets beforehand. The most popular flights are to Moscow (Russia), Tel-Aviv (Israel), Antalia (Turkey). There is discount system for the handicapped, children tickets, and discounts for those buying to-way tickets and for touring groups. You can get information on prices and book tickets directly at the airlines or at tourist agencies.
Lately the airport was renovated, its handling capacity has increased, faster services for passengers have been organized. Comfortable baggage trolleys are free of charge. In the airport there is a post office, a medical emergency station; there is an interpreter's service firm. Amiable workers at the information desk will advice you as to all issues you are interested in. In front of the desk there is a direct telephone to the BORISPOL hotel, where you can visit the restaurant or kill some time in a cozy room in front of a TV set, if, for example, your flight is late. The hotel is near the airport: book a room and a special shuttle bus will drive you and your luggage to the hotel entrance free of charge.
In the airport there is a currency exchange booth, where they will change your money at a very low (unprofitable) exchange rate compared to Kyiv. So do it only if you are too eager to have a closer look at the Ukrainian hryvna.
You can have a snack in a cafe on the ground floor. The prices are listed for 100 grams, so it is difficult to find out how much you'll finally have to pay, in case you are not an avid diat-lover and are used to to weighing your food. Beer costs three times more than in Kyiv and the meals are also far from cheap. A small cup of coffe costs round $1, tea - $0,5.
In the corner hidesan Internet cafe, with an astounding logic of prices: 1 hour - 20 UAH ($4, which is the double price of it at any Internet cafe in Kyiv downtown), half an hour - 15 UAH, a quarter of hour - 10 UAH.
Near the cafe there is a shop, where one can buy many guides on different cities of the world, magazines and souvenirs - at double prices. So, do not rush to spend your money - you can do it in Kyiv. On the first floor are situated a duty-free shop and a pub.
To drive to BORYSPOL by taxi will cost you 65-75 UAH ($12-15). Drivers, awaiting at the airport, will charge you some more for the road to Kyiv - round 100 UAH ($18-20). So it is much more profitable ti get to Kyiv by bus and then to take a taxi, which will drive you to the hotel. The POLIOT shuttle bus goes to Pobedy Square through Leningradskaya Square. The road takes about an hour. The interval between departure of buses also is around 1 hour, so if you go to the airport, better arrive at the bus terminal beforehand. From midnight to 4a.m. buses do not go. The cost of a bus-ride is 8-10 UAH ($2).
The airport KYIV ( ZHULIANY ) is within the city limits. It mostly serves for flights within the country. You can get there by a 40 minutes go by trolleybus #9 from St.Vladimir's Cathedral or Pobedy Square.
The Simferopol, Dnepropetrovsk, Lvov, Odessa airports also service international flights, but not a great number.
